Visit Florence in 1 day: the perfect itinerary to see everything

Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence

Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence

In the center of the city is the Piazza del Duomo. The Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore), really fascinating. It was built in the thirteenth century on pre-existing buildings but the façade is not original: it was, in fact, replaced in the nineteenth century. Santa Maria del Fiore is famous for its unique dome, designed by Brunelleschi, but also for the hypnotic coating of black and white bricks.

Opposite the Cathedral is the Baptistery of San Giovanni, a very important monument from the religious point of view, but also (and above all) from the artistic point of view.

Just next to the Duomo is Giotto’s Bell Tower, contemporary of the adjacent church of Santa Maria del Fiore. Giotto’s Bell Tower can be visited, but it is not recommended for those suffering from vertigo.
To get to the top of the belltower it takes a lot of patience, as there are 414 steps: what a struggle! But the view from above on Santa Maria del Fiore and the historic center of Florence is incomparable.
Walking along Via dei Calzaiuoli you will find yourself in a few minutes at the center of another wonderful Florentine square, Piazza della Signoria.

At the center of the square you will find the famous fountain of Neptune and, on the opposite side from which you will arrive, there are Palazzo Vecchio and the Loggia dei Lanzi (which houses beautiful sculptures such as Benvenuto Cellini’s Perseus and Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabines).

A few steps and you will be in front of the Uffizi Museum, where the most important masterpieces of Italian art are exhibited. Inside the museum you can visit many “themed” rooms: one absolutely not to be missed (perhaps the most beautiful of all) is dedicated to Botticelli. Also with regard to the Uffizi, the rows (especially in the summer) are interminable.

Ponte Vecchio in Florence

A few steps further, you will reach the Lungarno, from where you can see the nearby Ponte Vecchio. Traveling through it is an unforgettable experience: the small goldsmith shops have retained many of the original medieval features.

The Ponte Vecchio has the particularity of being almost completely closed on the sides and covered: on the Arno faces, in fact, the back of the goldsmith shops, which, obviously, could not be opened (many back-rooms come out of the bridge, to try to earn a little extra space).

Only a small central portion of the Ponte Vecchio, where there is a cooling fountain, is open and allows you to admire the view of the river.
